Haha, everytime I sign out, I think of another artist I should showcase! Well, here goes...
This is the Darkel I wanted so much to put on The Whateverist (also found them in the same Charlotte Gainsbourg-YouTube-mix along with Jane Birkin). I've been listening to My Own Sun for the better part of the last two months and it still makes me feel so cheerful:
Bunny Girl is a more recent find which, again, evokes emotion but... not quite the same emotion. Check it out! :
Mini-bio: Darkel was released in 2006 as the debut solo album from Jean-Benoît Dunckel of the French electronica band, Air.
There's not too much info about her other than the bio on her website but she has, aside from the Oh Land - EP, an album called Fauna that was released in 2008. Her sound reminds me of a dash of Björk and a hint of Kate Nash in a mystical other-world. Plus, I LOVE the video for Wolf & I (Live) - the balloons are awesome!
Wow! I JUST found The Gathering on a YouTube mix for Nightwish and can't get enough of this song!
No wonder her fans love her voice so much, Anneke has such stage presence live:
Mini-bio: The Gathering is a rock band from the Netherlands formed in 1989. Their eight album, released in 2006, was their last when Anneke van Giersbergen left to pursue a solo project.
Within Temptation changing it up a bit - I like it!
Within Temptation's new album The Unforgiving comes out next month and the first single "Faster" is a different sound but, like Muse's The Resistance, it's still true to their sound.
This is the single:
And this is the short film, Mother Maiden, that goes with it: It's kinda creepy (the little munchkins remind me of a cross between the little boy from The Grudge and Samara from The Ring...) but then again, maybe we need more black and less Bieber. Ooops, did I say that aloud?
Naw, I've got nothing against Biebs but I felt I needed to make fun of the fact that his getting a hair cut *gasp* makes the news.... Right after Muse, Within Temptation is one of my favorite bands and here's a sample of the sound I first fell in love with (okay, and the music video reminded me a LOT of The Phantom of the Opera - my pre-Muse obsession at the time).
Memories
And Jane Doe (Live)
Just as an aside, I think it's cute that Sharon and Robert (the bald guitarist who speaks at the beginning of Jane Doe... took me ages to figure that out >.<) were college sweethearts, started a band together, and now have 2 children.
Oh, and here's another single from the new album (sry, just ignore the screaming/fighting sounds - it was used as a promo song for a movie and I can't find a vid without them) :
Mini-bio: Within Temptation is a Dutch symphonic/ gothic metal/ rock band founded in 1996 by Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt.
I can't very well mention Jane without having at least showcased a couple of my favorite tunes from Charlotte! I think I first heard her a couple years back when a friend sent me "Heaven Can Wait" in an email: It was crazy then and even now I still find it a very clever music video. Plus, you just can't go wrong with Beck! (I think he deserves a post too... I'll have to add it to the ever-growing "to-post" list). But, moving on...
"Time of the Assassins"I found during the same YouTube-spree as Jane and I have to hand it to her, Charlotte makes some REALLY cool videos! Hint: Wait for the jacket ;)
When I was nattering on about "being exasperated" at my playlists the other day, I was referring to the fact that "The Whateverist" I ended up publishing was not quite what I had planned out with pen and paper (okay, it was a pencil). This is what the original line-up looked like:
1.L'aquoiboniste - Jane Birkin
2.Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - She & Him
3.My Own Sun - Darkel
4.Time of the Assassins - Charlotte Gainsbourg
5.Ghosts - Ladytron
6.L'Ombre et le Lumiere - Coralie Clemént
7.Bunny Girl - Darkel
8.Rococo - Arcade Fire
9.Shampain - Marina and the Diamonds
10.Black Sheep - Metric
11.Not In Love - Crystal Castles (ft. Robert Smith)
12.Oh No! - Marinia and the Diamonds
13.Runaway - Ladytron
14.Beau Fixe - Coralie Clemént
Not too different, but I've grown to like Darkel, Coralie and the others so much that I thought it would be a real loss if I didn't end up sharing them. Heh, but I suppose it gives me an incentive to give each of them their own posts!
Let's start with Jane Birkin:
The song L'aquoiboniste translates as "the whateverist" and was the inspiration for the tone of the playlist. I'd head of Jane Birkin before, her name often mentioned with the likes of Brigitte Bardot, but I discovered her music while searching for Charlotte Gainbourg. Turns out, she's her mom! Listening to Charlotte's music, you can really hear the similarities between her sound and that of her mother's.
One commenter on the video translated the lyrics:
He’s a whateverist
A sad joke maker
Who always say whatever
Whatever
A whateverist
Who doesn’t give a damn and who keeps on
Saying ok but who really means whatever
He’s a whateverist
A sad jokes maker
Who always say whatever
Whatever
A whateverist
Doesn’t need an optician
To see the shit of the world
Whatever
He’s a whateverist
A sad jokes maker
Who always say whatever
Whatever
A whateverist
Who tells me with a sad look
You, I love you, the others
Are all stupid jerks.
He’s a whateverist
A sad joke maker
Who always says whatever
Whatever
A whateverist
A humble guitarist
Who never plays in tune
Whatever
He’s a whateverist
A sad joke maker
Who always says whatever
Whatever
He’s a whateverist
A little too idealist
Who keeps on saying in every way
Whatever
He’s a whateverist
A sad joke maker
Who always say whatever
Whatever
A whateverist
A funny indifferent
Who says rightly or wrongly whatever...
Mini-bio: she's an English-born actress and singer who lived in France and is best known as the muse of Serge Gainsbourg. I'd never really given much thought to the "Birkin bag" before, but it was designed for her in 1984 by Hermès. The story goes that during a flight from Paris to London, she pulled out her Hermès datebook from her bag only to have all that papers fall to the floor so she complained to the passenger sitting next to her. Unbeknownst to Jane, that passenger happened to be the chairman of Hermès whom, after hearing her complaint, created the Birkin bag!
I haven't forgotten about MuseontheMind, but alack, life seems to have gotten the better of me. Blast you, "real life"! (Although, I recently saw a great rendition of Shakespear's "Kind Lear" and vowed to myself to incorporate some his text into my vocabulary, so, you'll have to grin and bear all the flibbertigibbet ;)
I was recently reminded of my blogging absence by a friend (thanks!) but also by the nearing anniversary of this blog. It was one year ago this week that I started blogging to, erm, pass the time. But it seems that time was the one that passed me by. What was it that someone wise once said, oh yes:
"Don't waste your time or time will waste...you."- Matthew James Bellamy
Great words from the enigmatic Bellamy.
Anyhoo, I think this blog is going to officially declare itself as a music blog - there is so much great music out there! Even as I express my exasperation that I can't offer my playlists in a single location, I'll try and figure out a more clever way to deliver my new discoveries.
Now begins my effort to divorce myself from fbook and dedicate more time to MuseontheMind.
*rolls up sleeves*
Ahh, so much to talk about with dear Maffoo - but I'll leave that for it's own post. LOVE this shirt!
Now if I could just get the new playlist up... Oy, technology is going to be the death of me >.<
